HD TV – What Is It?

High Definition TV is about detail. It’s seeing the individual blades of grass rippling in the breeze.

Now maybe High Definition TV doesn’t nearly live up to the huge promises. But believe me it is impressive.

Standard definition pictures give you between 480 and 576 horizontal lines on your TV. That is how it’s been since the 1930’s. If you get close to your TV, it is easy to see the pixels that make up the picture.

High Definition TV gives you 1080 lines in your picture. That actually means there is nearly 6 times more data in the picture than your old TV. You can honestly see this too.

Obviously you need High Definition content to make the most of it. So look for HD channels on Sky, cable and Freesat. And pick Blu-ray instead of normal DVD.

Plus there is more than just greater detail available.

High Definition TV also lets you get a bigger TV. Standard definition pictures on a large TV in a small room do not look good. The picture is huge but it is blurred because you can see the larger pixels that make up the image. You have to get your eyes farther away to convince them into seeing a normal image.

Anything Else?

High Def TV is about audio quality too. With HD you get CD quality audio, which might also be surround sound just like there is at the movies.

Recording

Don’t forget if you are recording programs then your recorder must understand HD too. If not when you play it back you will get less than you bargained for. Read carefully DVD recorder reviews, hard disk recorder reviews and Freesat PVR reviews to be safe (my personal favourite is a Humax Freesat PVR – here’s a Humax Foxsat HDR review).

Finally

High Def TV really gives you a giant leap in your television watching experience. Don’t miss it.
