2 Things to Consider When Buying a New TV
If you want to buy a new TV now then you have even bigger sizes to choose from, and some important new technology is starting to emerge, making it really hard to nail down which model you should get. One good thing which makes your choice easier is that it looks like the plasma TV is a dying breed, it seems the LCD TV has won that particular war. You will still find some plasma TVs for sale, and they have come on a long way in recent years, but the problems with screen burn never really went away so LCD TVs now firmly control the market.
Below you will find two TV technologies you need to think about when you go shopping again:
3D TV is starting to emerge: That’s right, 3D televisions are already on the market, and more will surely come flooding out now that others have made the tentative first steps, but are they any good? Well the main problem with a 3D capable TV is obviously the glasses, the current generation use ‘active shutter’ glasses which means each lens opens and shuts faster than our eye can notice, in order to show each eye a different image. They look a lot better than the red and green lens glasses we had when I was a kid, and I wouldn’t mind watching them once a week with a good film, but watching the news in them? No thanks.
So I think it would be wise to wait a few years before you get your first 3D capable telly, hopefully by then the technology will have advanced and we can see if they have done away with the glasses or not. Also by then the price will have come way down, the bugs have been ironed out, and a clear market leader will have emerged.
LED backlighting is available: Yes the TVs often referred to as LED TVs are out, when in fact they are LCD TVs with LED backlighting. This technology means they have taken the CCFL backlighting that is in every other LCD TV, and is a little bulky, and they have replaced it with ultra small and light LEDs instead. This means the TVs are ultra slim at the sides, and are just 2 inches at their thickest point, but is that really worth more money when current TVs are pretty slim anyway?
I think it is a really good step forward for LCD TVs, and I will be getting one in a year or so for sure, but at the moment they cost a lot more than the normal version because the technology is all new and sparkly, and I don’t think it is worth paying that much extra for. Instead look for this in a year or so when the prices have come down, and if you can get one for 10% more than a regular CCFL version then grab it, otherwise I don’t think it is worth it.
Another thing you need to think about is the size, for me then a 42 inch TV is more than big enough for the main TV of the house, but if you want to show off then a 55 inch model definitely makes a statement.
